La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (LANMA) has topped the 2016 District League Table with a score of 77.8 while North Tongu came last with 40.9 points.

The District League Table, which is produced by UNICEF Ghana and the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), aims at supporting central and local government to better understand progress in development across the country.

A director at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Dorothy Onny, said the misconception by some assemblies that the ranking is a tool for naming and shaming was unfortunate.

According to her, it is benchmark for measuring the level of development and promoting social accountability at the district level.

“There is an issue of misconception for the purpose of the district league table. Because its assemblies that are being ranked, assemblies think it is ‘name and shame’, which is not the case. But what the tool seeks to achieve is to see how we are doing at the district level where development is concerned, and there are indicators that we are measuring. Security is part of it, sanitation, water, and education are all part of the indicators,” she stated at a programme in Accra in Thursday 16 March.
